James Park Williams, 91, of Surprise, Ariz., passed away Thursday, Sept. 22, 2022, at Hospice of the Valley, after a brief illness.

Born July 30, 1931, Jim grew up in Grosse Pointe and attended public school, eventually meeting his future wife at Grosse Pointe High School — “The High” — from which he graduated in 1949.

Childhood summers were always spent with family at Walloon Lake. In 1953, Jim graduated from Hillsdale College with a degree in economics and was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Immediately following college, Jim and his brother, Jack, were caravan drivers for Chet Sampson’s “Western Tours,” which visited national parks, movie and television studios and Bing Crosby’s ranch.

Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Signal Corps from 1953 to 1955. He continued to advance his love of photography as a member of the Camera Corps and received advanced training as a combat motion picture photographer.

In 1955, Jim went to work at the J.L. Hudson department store in downtown Detroit. He became a buyer in the men’s department across the company, which involved annual six-week trips to Europe and Asia with Ann. He retired from Hudson in 1982, and initiated his successful career at Bolton-Johnson Realtors until he retired in 2004.

He loved his extended family, the Grosse Pointes, weekends and picnics at the Farms Pier, and sailing or boating on Lake St. Clair. He was a 70-plus-year member of Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, serving on the Board of Trustees, Nominating Committee and as an usher. In 1997, he served as president of the Grosse Pointe Board of Realtors, was Michigan Association of Realtors Realtor of the Year and, in 2003, received the Grosse Pointe Board of Realtors Frederick G. Scully Memorial Award for career service.

Ann and Jim were actively involved in planning the Grosse Pointe High School Class of 1949 reunion every five years. They planned and attended their 70-year reunion in 2019. He was an active member of the Grosse Pointe Senior Men’s Club until relocating to Arizona in 2004.

Upon arrival in Surprise, Ariz., Jim traded his snow shovel for sunshine, grandkids, golf courses and bowling alleys with family, friends and visitors. He was an affiliate member of Desert Palms Presbyterian Church and volunteered at Banner Del Webb Medical Center.

“Papa” will be missed by his family and many friends, including those from grade school, high school, college and workplaces.

Jim was predeceased by his wife, Ann, to whom he was married for 63 years. Jim is survived by his children, James “Jay” (Kim) of Carefree, Ariz., and Catherine Deevy of Barrington, Ill.; and grandchildren, Cody (Kelsey), Jessen, Jorie, Saige and Tanner.

A memorial will be held at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church in Grosse Pointe Farms at a future date.

Name: Philip D’Agostino

Born April 17, 1922, in Detroit, to Luigi and Maria (nee D’Annunzio), Philip attended San Francisco grade school and graduated from Northeastern High School.

During World War II, Philip served in the Philippines and later, in China as a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps. After the war, he attended Lawrence Institute of Technology and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree in 1949. He later earned his PE (professional engineering) degree and worked at Ford Motor Co. In 1970, he met his future wife, Colleen Tunney. They were married at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in 1971.

In 1977, Phil took early retirement. He could be found on the golf course, bowling with the senior league or at the bridge table, becoming a bronze life master. He also spent time showcasing his musical abilities, playing the piano or accordion. He and Colleen traveled during this time, including a visit to the family home in Villa Latina, Italy. A devout Catholic, Phil also was a member of the Knights of Columbus for many years. 

Phil is survived by his wife, Colleen; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Dominic (Rose) and Tony (Anna), and sisters, Bertha (John), Jennie (Sam) and Theresa (Frank). While at Ascension St. John Hospital, Phil received great care. He wanted to thank the hospice teams, as well as the kind nurses in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit and those on 6-North. He also wanted to thank his home helpers, Marsha and Laura.

Phil will lie in state at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 19. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 10 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 22415 Overlake, St. Clair Shores.

Name: Ivor W. Carter

Ivor passed away on May 23, 2022 in Naperville, IL where he has lived for the last 12 years. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Joan, of Naperville, IL; his daughter Sue (Joe) of Cincinnati, OH; and son Steve (Devyn) of Glen Ellyn, IL; his 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Ivor was born just outside Cambridge, England in 1926. As a boy during WWII he joined the auxiliary Fire Brigade delivering messages all over the countryside and when he was old enough he joined the Royal Air Force. Once the war had ended, he went to school in London and received degrees in both mechanical and electrical engineering. It was while working that he met Joan, they eventually got married and spent their honeymoon motorcycling through Austria. After a few years they decided to move to Canada and from there they moved to Detroit where he accepted an engineering position with Chrysler. Ivor developed seven patents for electrical and electronic emission control equipment over his 30 year career at Chrysler.

Ivor loved to camp and travel so he spent many summer holidays packing up the family and a small pop-up trailer and traveling all over the United States. He eventually made it to all 50 states! He also spent his free time gardening, doing NY Times crosswords, more traveling, and always doing home projects of some sort for his house or his children’s. When they moved into an independent community in IL to be closer to family, he became known as the person who could fix something for you or he’d build it. He was a great husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many, whose smile, laugh, and kind words will be missed. Tea time won’t be the same.

Name: William S. Quinlan

William S. Quinlan of Grosse Pointe Woods, graduate of the engineering master’s program at University of Detroit, died peacefully on August 24, 2022 at the young age of 90. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years, Margaret A. (Zorn) Quinlan. Bill was the father of two sons and two daughters: William P. Quinlan (Barb); John K. Quinlan (Christine); Catherine Q. Polhemus (Mark); and Susan M. Temple (Blake). Bill was the proud grandfather of 10 grandchildren: Robert Quinlan, Jeremy Quinlan, Emily Quinlan, Erik Nowak, Matthew Polhemus (Leah), Nicholas Polhemus (Halle), Katelyn Polhemus, Michael Temple, Charles Temple, and Robert Temple. Bill would have been a great-grandfather this December.

Bill’s greatest pleasures in life was being an architect and owning his own firm, Quinlan Associates AIA. He had a passion for flying airplanes (including his own) and hunting with his friends up in Gaylord. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at the cottage he built.

He belonged to many clubs and organizations including: The American Institute of Architects, supporter of the Selfridge Base Community Council, the Optimist Club, Grosse Pointe Senior Men’s Club, Knights of Columbus, OLSOS Usher’s Club, and GPW Power Squadron. He was a past committee member for AIA Chapter of Michigan, member of Alpha Gamma Tau fraternity, past secretary for the K of C, past Commander for the Grosse Pointe Power Squadron, active with The Helm Life Center of Grosse Pointe Farms, member of the Rotary Club, and active member / resident at Oakmont Sterling this past year.

Name: John P. Urquhart

John “Jack” Urquhart, 96, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 25, 2022, in Howell, MI. Jack is survived by his wife, Theresa, of Brighton; his daughters Carol (Bud), of Dexter, and Marie of Howell; sons Greg of St. Clair Shores, John (Sandra) of Rochester, and Mark (Michele) of Sterling Heights. Jack was born on February 7, 1926 in Detroit to parents, Adam and Mary (Murphy) Urquhart.

While he was in high school, Jack joined the Navy to serve his country during World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater from 1944 to 1946. He was always proud of his status as a World War II Veteran. After he completed his service in the Navy, Jack returned home to receive vocational training at Lawrence Tech and Michigan State University. This training led him to accept a position as an Automotive Engineer for Chrysler, where he worked for more than 40 years.

Jack was truly a great family man and a loving father. He was happily married to Theresa for 72 years! Together, they had 5 children which led to 7 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren who all love him dearly. Jack was a social and active man in his community. He was deeply involved in many athletic and social activities for the majority of his life. His favorite pastime was spending time with his family. His family and friends will always remember how very generous he was with his time and wisdom. He was a wonderful man who impacted the lives of everyone he knew. He will be missed by many.

George Anthony Schulte of Grosse Pointe Farms passed away peacefully Monday, July 11, 2022, at the age of 88. He was born May 31, 1934 in Detroit to George and Mary Magdalen Schulte.

George served proudly in the United States Air Force. He attended St. Clare of Montefalco Elementary School in Grosse Pointe Park and St. Bernard High School in Detroit before receiving his undergraduate degree from the University of Detroit in electrical engineering.

George retired from Detroit Edison in 1995 after 37 years of faithful employment. He was a member of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) and RETAP (Retired Engineer Technical Assistance Program).

He was a member of the Men’s Club of Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, Indian Guide and Club Scout Leader. He loved to golf, play tennis and play the piano. His biggest love in life was spending time with his family and watching his grandchildren play sports.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Carol; daughters, Ann Downey and Nancy Augustitus; sons, Brian Schulte (Nancy) and Mark Schulte (Lisa); grandchildren, Matt, Alex, Ben and Sara; sister, Mary Schulte and brother, Joe Schulte (Carol). George was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Thomas Schulte and Edward Schulte; and sons-in-law, Sean Downey and Tom Augustitus.

He will be dearly missed by his extended family and many friends.

A visitation was held Friday, July 15, with a Rosary at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Ave., Grosse Pointe Woods. A funeral Mass took place Saturday, July 16, at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 467 Fairford, Grosse Pointe Woods. Interment at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Twp.

Name: Arthur H Engstrom

Grosse Pointe Park resident Arthur Hoover Engstrom, 102 years old, passed away peacefully Monday, July 4th 2022.

Born June 5, 1920, in Duluth, Minnesota, to Oscar Peter Engstrom and Ebba Svensen Engstrom. Arthur developed his work ethic as a young boy delivering newspapers in Duluth in addition to working for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Arthur attended the University of Southern California, studying Mechanical Engineering. He fondly remembered his summers as an undergraduate working as a lineman at the newly constructed Hoover Dam.

During World War II, Arthur was selected by the Henry Ford Naval Training School in Dearborn, Michigan to be an Instructor of Diesel Engine Operation, Maintenance and Repair. After the war, he built his career around his love of diesel engines, working in several lead engineering positions at companies including Ready-Power (Generators), Packard Marine Division (Mine Sweepers) and Continental Motors (Marine & Tank Engines). Arthur and his family moved to New Jersey where he was Chief Engineer at Purolator Filters. Later he and his family happily returned to Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan when Arthur became a Chief Engineer, Teledyne-Continental Motors. Professionally he was active in the Engineering Society of Detroit and the Society of Automotive Engineers.

Arthur and his wife, Marilyn, met at the Detroit Boat Club while she was teaching children how to swim. As active members they enjoyed dancing, dining, swimming and raising their three daughters; Lynn, Margie and Wendy. He served on the board of directors for the club and they were swim team chairs. Arthur and Marilyn later became members at Lochmoor Club enjoying many social activities and dining. In 1996 Arthur joined the Grosse Pointe Senior Men’s Club and the Woodworkers group. He greatly enjoyed the friendship and camaraderie of the Woodworkers until his passing.

Arthur and Marilyn Smith married February 22, 1947. They enjoyed 64 years of marriage prior to Marilyn’s passing. He is survived by their three daughters: Lynn Engstrom-Heller, her sons Marc Heller and Derek (Michele) Heller, along with their daughter Valentina Harley Heller; Marjorie Engstrom, her husband Emilio DiPietro, their son Michael Arthur DiPietro and daughter Emily and husband Blake Williamson and their 3 children; Wendy Engstrom Gutermuth, her husband Terry Gutermuth, their sons Erik (Lisa) Gutermuth and Brian Gutermuth.

Arthur was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, brother, and dear friend to so many. He loved sharing his many life stories and telling jokes. He enjoyed gardening, tinkering with his cars and home projects.

He is joyously reunited in Heaven with his wife Marilyn, his parents, brother Rinehart Engstrom and two sisters Bernice Branting and Violet Thibault and good friends that have gone before him.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Name: Frederick Ollison III

Frederick Ollison III, 84, of Grosse Pointe, passed away peacefully Thursday, June 9, 2022, after a brave battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Stroud Ollison; son, Frederick Ollison IV; daughter, Mary “Missy” Ollison Martinson (Patrick); granddaughters, Lucy and Mary Martinson; stepchildren, Michael Rainey (Sarah) and Emily Klinec; step-grandchildren, Tyler Rainey and Oliver Klinec; and brother, Robert Hague Ollison. He was predeceased by his parents, Frederick Ollison Jr. and Helen Hague Ollison; and sister, Judith Ollison McKean.

Fred grew up in Grosse Pointe Farms and attended Grosse Pointe University School. He graduated from Hotchkiss Academy in 1955 and spent a year at Asheville School in North Carolina before earning a Bachelor of Science degree in economics in 1961, from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. While there, he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon, serving as social chairman and establishing lifelong friendships.

After serving in the U.S. Army, Fred became president/owner of the family business, Sanders Cleaning Co. He later received his real estate license and worked at Bolton-Johnston Associates until retiring in 2020. Fred joined Grosse Pointe Rotary in 1970, served as its president, was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow and received its Infinite Sky Award. He also served as president of the Grosse Pointe War Memorial Board of Directors and worshipped at Christ Church Grosse Pointe. Fred was a lifetime member of the Yondotega Club and Country Club of Detroit, the latter of which he served a term as president. As a member of The 78 rpm Club, Fred spent many happy hours sharing his love of music. Fred’s greatest joy was his family and friends; whether entertaining at home or traveling the world, Fred and Sarah’s life together was an adventure. His warmth, quick wit, intelligence and unwavering loyalty will be missed by all who knew him. Name: Howard M. “Joe” Trowern

Former Grosse Pointe Park resident Howard Trowern, 96, died peacefully Thursday, May 12, 2022, at his home in Silver Spring, Md. Known to his many friends as “Joe,” he was predeceased in 2015, by his wife of 64 years, Nancy.

Joe was born Aug. 20, 1925, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Mr. Howard and Mrs. Emma Trowern. He attended Mount Hermon School (now the Northfield Mount Hermon School) in Northfield, Mass., before enlisting in 1943, at age 17, in the U.S. Army. Mr. Trowern served as a platoon leader in the infantry under Gen. Patton in the European theater. Joe saw combat action in France, the Battle of the Bulge and the Central Europe campaign, participating in the liberation of Buchenwald and Ohrdruf subcamp complexes, before connecting with the Russian army near Czechoslovakia. For his service, Joe received the Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, the Combat Infantry Badge and a Presidential Unit Citation for leading the assault on Olzheim, a communications hub on the Siegfried Line. Mr. Trowern was given a battlefield commission and was discharged in 1946, as a second lieutenant. In 2012, he was awarded the French Legion of Honor.

On his 20th birthday in August 1945, Joe returned to his parents’ home in East Williston, N.Y., where he was greeted by a beautiful young woman who was just a shy backyard neighbor when Joe left to join the Army. In exchange for helping him wash his car, he offered her a ride to the beach. That was the last car Joe Trowern ever washed. Nancy and Joe were married June 23, 1951. After the war, Joe attended Hamilton College, Rutgers University and Harvard Business School, earning a master’s degree in business administration.

He, Nancy and their four children moved to Grosse Pointe in 1973, where he lived until moving to the Washington, D.C., area in 2007. They were active members of Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, the Grosse Pointe War Memorial, Grosse Pointe Sail Club, Grosse Pointe Newcomers Association and Mariners Church in Detroit.

Joe and Nancy were avid sailors and hosted countless happy hours at their home on Berkshire Road and on their sailboat at Windmill Pointe Park. He was known by friends and family for a gregarious spirit, storytelling skills and a sense of humor that often relied on his wife as his “straight man.” Joe spent the last 20 years of his life largely confined to a wheelchair, the result of being struck by a car as a pedestrian years before. However, he never complained and never lost his ability to laugh or tell jokes and stories. Joe was a chair of a committee during his tenure with the MCGP.

Joe also was predeceased by his sister, Jane Piatt. He is survived by his children, Michael Trowern, Cynthia Smith (Dan), Peter Trowern (Colleen) and Steven Trowern (Marcella); and seven grandchildren.

A service will be held at a date to be determined at Arlington National Cemetery with military honors, followed by a celebration of his life in the Washington, D.C., area.

Name: Leon (Lee) J. Kosek

Lee Kosek was born in Detroit, the son of John and Sophia Kosek, who immigrated from Poland. He graduated with honors from Cass Tech High School and the University of Detroit and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Detroit Dental School.

Lee was a veteran and served in Patton’s Third Army throughout Europe during World War II. While socializing with the U of D Polish student club, Lee met Delphine Makowski and realized he had met his match. They married in 1952, and shared 65 joyful years of marriage before Del passed in 2017.

Dr. Leon J. Kosek, “Dr. K” to many, built his dental practice from the ground up, starting with a small office on Van Dyke in Detroit and later expanding to a larger space in Warren. He was an active member in the Detroit District Dental Society and American Dental Association, serving on a committee that facilitated the introduction of fluoride to drinking water to improve the dental health of children. His patients appreciated his kind and gentle touch and Dr. K especially enjoyed talking with them and learning about their lives. When he retired at age 60, he missed most conversing with his patients.

Lee and Del dearly loved each other, their family and their friends. Cherished memories included time spent boating, fishing, skiing and traveling. Lee was skilled at playing tennis and was disappointed when he had to give up playing singles in favor of doubles when he turned 75. Lee’s favorite trick was to play with two forehands as he was ambidextrous and could play with both hands. He was on the courts year-round until he turned 90.

His lifelong joys included world travel with Del, watching movies and football. Lee was ecstatic when he found the “Red Zone,” where he could watch every touchdown in every game as soon as it happened. Above all, Lee was a devoted family man and his seven children are still amazed at his immense patience and calm demeanor.

Leon is survived by his children, Leon Jr. (Cheryl), Jim, Ann Conklin (Matt), Cathy Hubbard (John), Lynn, John (Terri) and Steve (Jane); grandchildren, Joe, Andrew, Debra (Jeff), Matt (Christine), Eric, Tom (Christina), Jenny (Mike), Maia, Thalia, Kate and Krista; and great-grandchildren, Liam, Bethany, Declan, Eliana, Will, Owen, Brayden and two more on the way. Leon was predeceased by his beloved wife, Delphine; parents, John and Sophia Kosek; brothers, Joseph and Thomas Kosek; and sister, Estelle Pazgrat. Name: David Case

David R. Case, 80, died peacefully at home on April 8th. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and family man to his extended family of seven brothers and sisters and multiple nieces and nephews. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Joanne, and his adoring children, Amy, Jeff (Suzanne), and Mike, and three precious grandchildren, Elle, Clio, and Cael. His siblings, Joanne (David, deceased), Jane (Andy, deceased), John (Marilyn), Earl (Peggy), Joyce (Jon), and Marty (Lisa) will all miss him dearly. He is predeceased by his brother Edward (Janet) and his wonderful parents, Earl and Marcella Case. In his younger years, he enjoyed coaching his boys’ Little League teams and also attending his children’s multiple activities.

Name: Carl E. Berger

Born in Detroit on March 10, 1929, Carl was a graduate of the Saint John Berchman School and De La Salle High School, and went on to earn a Master’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Detroit Mercy.

Carl was employed for over 40 years by the Detroit Edison Company (now DTE), where he was an accomplished industrial water treatment expert and forged many cherished life-long friendships. Carl was a gentle soul who enjoyed many things, including fishing, golf, softball, pool, and family summer vacations on Manitoulin Island. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dolores, in 2009, and is survived by his sons Eric (Melanie) and Tom (Jennifer), his daughter, Karen, six grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. The family would like to give special thanks to all of the caregivers who provided invaluable love and support to Carl over the years.

Name: Paul S. Teranes

It is with great sadness we report the passing of Paul S. Teranes, age 86, on Mon., May 9, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. Paul was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a cherished friend to many. He will be dearly missed.

Paul was born on June 25th, 1935 to Stephen Teranes and Anne (Goldgruber) Teranes in Two Rivers Wisconsin. Paul was born with congenital glaucoma, a relatively rare condition that caused him to gradually and completely lose his eyesight throughout his childhood. Determined to provide the best life for their son, Paul’s parents prioritized his education and encouraged his independence, advocating for Paul to attend the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and supporting Paul’s decision to go away to college. Paul graduated with honors from The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1958. After graduation, Paul took the advice and encouragement of his eye doctor and went on to law school, receiving his JD from the University of Michigan Law School in 1961.

Paul was well-suited to the practice of law, and he had a long and rewarding career. He served as an assistant prosecuting attorney for Wayne County from 1962 to 1982. He was appointed to the Wayne County Circuit Court by Governor Millikin in May 1982 and was elected to three six-year terms. He retired from the bench in 2001 and continued to work as a visiting judge, arbitrator, and facilitator. He was known for his knowledge of the law, respectful treatment of everyone in his courtroom, calculation of numbers in his head, and giving directions without a map.

Paul’s awards include the “Professional Man of the Year” award from University of Detroit High School in 1978. He was also selected by Michigan Lawyers Weekly as one of Michigan’s most respected judges while he served on the court.

For as sharp as he was intellectually, Paul’s personality was soft. He was, above all else, a kind man. He loved people and conversations. He told endless stories of friends and acquaintances and events, with an appreciation of the humanity that unites us. Paul was a dedicated citizen and an active member in the community. He served on the boards of the Leader Dogs for the Blind, SMART, and the Michigan Law Association committee on Americans with Disabilities Act. He was an active member of the Catholic Lawyers Society, the Witenagemot Society and the Easy Riders bike club. Paul was a devoted parishioner at St. Philomena Catholic Church for many decades, where he also served on the Administration and Finance Committee.

Paul approached life with a positive attitude, and he overcame the many challenges in his life with consistent good humor and dignity. He was an inspiration to many. Much should also be remembered about the people that helped him along the way, including his parents, who took great effort to expose Paul to sights of the world before he completely lost his vision; Leader Dogs for the Blind, who raised, trained and provided the many service dogs that gave Paul his independence; and his wife Barbara, his beloved companion for 56 years, who ensured their lives were full with friendship, family, service, love, and many many wonderful adventures traveling the world together.

Teranes is survived by his wife, Barbara; his children, Richard (Cindy) Teranes of Grosse Pointe, Jane (David Holway) Teranes of San Diego, CA, Daniel (Kayla) Teranes of Grosse Pointe, and Amy (Corey) Snow of Pacifica, CA; his grandchildren Ethan, Carter, Cole, Camryn, Lorenzo, Eva, Marcella, Anderson, Alpheus and Greta; and his trusted Leader Dog, Morgan. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Dorthey Drahos and Richard Teranes.

A. Michael Prus of Grosse Pointe Farms, MI and Ocean Ridge, FL passed away surrounded by family on March 18, 2022 following complications from a stroke. He was 89 years old. For forty-five years, Michael was the devoted husband of Judith Goodnow Prus, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his son Michael Prus and his wife Diane Prus, his daughter Elizabeth Prus Myers and her husband Gregory Myers, his son Jeffrey Prus and his wife Hilary Prus, and his companion of many years Mary Ann Dinan. He was beloved by his six grandchildren: Lindsey, Charlie, Brooks, Charlotte, Emily, and Jeffrey. Michael was predeceased by his sister Doris Prus Sullivan and is survived by his brother Thomas Prus and sister Kathryn Prus Richardson.

Michael was born in Detroit, Michigan, a son of the late Michael A. Prus and Sophia Cichon Prus. He graduated from St. Andrew High School in 1950, Wayne State University in 1954, and Wayne State Medical School in 1958. He completed his internship at Grace Hospital followed by his medical residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he earned the post of Chief Resident.

After returning to Detroit following his residency, Michael joined the anesthesiology practice at Grace Hospital. He was named Chief of Anesthesia of Grace Hospital in 1974 and Harper Hospital in 1977. Michael was always open to new, innovative ideas and respected for his mentoring and problem-solving skills. Under his leadership, he and his partners expanded their practice to over 80 anesthesiologists, serving many hospitals across the Detroit area, and creating residency programs to groom the best anesthesia talent. Michael served as Medical Director of the Grace Hospital School of Nurse Anesthesia and was a driving force behind the inception of the Harper Hospital Same Day Surgery Center, the first outpatient surgery center in Michigan. He served as its Medical Director from 1983 to 2002. Michael earned the respect of all his colleagues, including surgeons and staff. After his retirement, he assisted a hand surgery practice in establishing their stand-alone surgery center. Michael was honored to be invited to join the Academy of Anesthesiology where he played an active role throughout his later career and into retirement.

Michael was an avid golfer, gardener, traveler, fisherman, and hunter. He prided himself on his vegetable garden and rose garden and enjoyed growing and experimenting with plants of any kind. He had the opportunity to travel the world with his wife Judy and many close friends over the years. He was a voracious reader and enjoyed word puzzles, especially crossword puzzles, and Jeopardy. His lifelong curiosity and appetite for knowledge included new pursuits as an octogenarian, such as yoga and guitar lessons. He loved spending time with his family in Florida and Northern Michigan, including annual family deer hunting trips with his brother, sons, and grandsons. Michael will be remembered for his warm smile, easy laugh, and kind spirit.
