“A thing of beauty is a joy forever,” says John Keats. Well maybe not forever, but the Conservatory on Belle Isle has plenty of beauty to show. Our city’s gem is often overlooked by us locals, but fourteen of us did go to visit on the 18th of this month.

We first entered a tropical jungle. It had bright fruit glowing in dark foliage as well as flowers with strange shapes and colors. As we wound around to the other side of this large refurnished structure we found a dry western desert with its variety of bristling cacti.

All a kind of wonderland.

Most of us went on from Belle Isle to Sindbad’s—still doing it’s fine job and celebrating its seventy-fifth anniversary year.

If you did not make this event, ask a member who did. All we talked to said they had an excellent time.

Stay tuned for our next outing on the River.

On Thursday, April 24,2025, an adventuresome group of fourteen Men’s Club members and their guests made their way to the manufacturing complex that was begun by Henry Ford himself in 1917.

Our group took a fifteen minute bus ride from the Ford Museum to the factory complex. The scale of the place continues to amaze. On the property there are ten or twelve plants all making parts for cars and trucks.

Our tour started with three interesting films, on wide screens, giving the history of manufacturing in the plants. Next came our walk around the balcony of the plant that builds the best-selling Ford-150 truck.
We watched from above as a moving track with men and machines turned out one truck a minute. That’s 2,400 trucks a day! Would not Henry Ford be proud?

A TRIP TO THE AUTO SHOW

Men’s Club members got a chance see our Motor City show its stuff on January 17th at Huntington Place.

A cheerful band of Men’s Club members and their guests met at Sindbad’s, dined well, and boarded Denny’s bus for a two hour visit.

There were plenty of shiny new vehicles, foreign and domestic, and stylish ladies to explain their merits.

Some of us got to climb a steep mountain and navigate the confidence course with Jeeps that defied gravity. Others went Impressively fast with EV models. They did stop on time.

Dreams of our next new car will linger long.

The smiles on the trip back to our cars at Sindbad's gave evidence that a fine time was had by all.

On December 7th the Men’s Club of Grosse Pointe put a glow on the holiday season.

Our M.C., the irrepressible Jim Callahan, set things in motion as he introduced Jerry Partridge and the choir. Some fine old tunes were brought to life with the expert help of our accompanist, Ron Pietratoni

A hot and delicious dinner followed, provided by the excellent Bayview kitchen and staff.

Then, tickets were drawn by Mary Wolking, and fancy gifts were delivered by our Christmas helpers, Mary Solomon and Marcia Cron.

A few nimble dancers took to the floor with music provided by a man who knows his music, D.J., Willie Barber.

The efforts of a number of people paid off --as our club carried on its tradition of Fun, Festivities and Fellowship.

Stay tuned for the next Special Event. Hope to see you, January 9th, 2024.

Mark Jahnke reminds us that although the first robin has not been spotted, spring is officially around the corner. It is the time that golfers rise out of the winter doldrums and anticipate the beginning of a new season. This is the season during which the natural world revives and reinvigorates after the colder winter months. During spring, dormant plants begin to grow again, new seedlings sprout out of the ground and hibernating animals awake. Similarly with the Club, February is traditionally the lowest month of attendance at our luncheon meetings. Members seem to hibernate or find some time to join the snowbirds and head south. After all, how many ice storms can one take?

August is here, and with it, “The Dog Days of Summer.” It was probably in grade school that we learned that the month of August gets its name from Caesar Augustus, son of Julius Caesar. We also learned that Julius Caesar came up with what we now call the Julian Calendar, hence the need for a new monthly name. However, I always thought that the hottest and most unbearable days of the season, the “Dog Days”, were something that came from the Old Farmer’s Almanac.

Now that July is here, summer is in full swing. While some parts of the country saw blistering heat in June or before, Michigan is fortunate to have the Great Lakes moderate the weather. The cooler Spring and warmer Fall doesn’t lengthen the overall growing season, but it does mean that we can plant later and still have a harvest before the winter frost. Although the saying is “Knee high by the 4th of July”, there are some varieties of sweet corn that can be planted right now for harvest in September. The same goes for some bean varieties and most cold weather vegetables. Check the back of the seed packet for varieties that mature in 60 days or less.

Can you believe that June is already here and with it, summer is just around the corner? Although summer isn’t official until the 21st, the weather seems fine to me. Our members who are snow birds have returned from their winter hangouts and have re-acclimated to Michigan’s weather. Those of us who aren’t into ice fishing are just happy and glad that outdoor activities have returned.

May is the shortest month of the year (3 letters), but the longest in expectations. The first of the month, May Day, is considered the start of the summer season. It’s a time of celebration as we can see the world around us changing from the dreary winter brown and grey to green. Daylight is getting longer and, except for a few frosty nights at the beginning of the month, temperatures are beginning to remain warm. It’s time for planting or transplanting. Perennial flowers such as daffodils and tulips are in full bloom, as are Magnolia trees. May also starts the beginning of outdoor grilling, although for some us that really went on all winter. At least it’s warmer outside. If nothing else, clean up the grill and practice for Memorial Day.

It’s Spring! Yep, it became official on March 20th , at least according to the calendar. I had hoped that all of the erratic winds and funny weather patterns were behind us, but on April 1st it was cold and some areas had a light snow. It’s not an April Fool’s joke by Mother Nature, just regular Michigan weather.

The new 2022 Men’s Club Directory was printed and was available at the February 22nd meeting. Unfortunately, there were some mistakes in the Directory. The most glaring error was applied to John Woodhouse. Not only was his entry omitted from the Directory, but he was quite surprised to be listed as deceased on the Memorials page. John would like everyone to know that he is very much alive and well. Those who see him at the luncheons have not been visited by a poltergeist. The missing entry and memo-rials listing was due to a mistake (operator error) made when updating the database. The Directory is printed based on information from the database.

While February is the shortest month in the year, fortunately there’s enough time for two speakers at the Men’s Club luncheon meetings. We’re almost back to normal…well as normal as we can be given the circumstances. It looks like Covid has settled on a contagious version with milder symptoms. I’m sure that there will be future versions, just as there has been with the Flu. This means that we can get back to something approaching normal while still remaining vigilant and cautious. Remember, the virus doesn’t want to kill us, it just wants to take over the world.

It’s now a new year and many of us have made, or will make, resolutions for change toward a better future. Perhaps the ancient Romans started this when they named this month after the god Janus. Janus was considered the god of beginnings future. We follow this when we show Father Time and Baby New Year. I don’t know if Julius Caesar used this time of the year to say “forget the Gauls I’m making a resolution to invade Britain,” but he could have.

“MERRY CHRISTMAS” and “HAPPY NEW YEAR” The two statements go together, don’t they? Both expressions mark a new beginning of something, and I’m not talking about Star Wars. Of course I could just use the all encompassing term “HAPPY HOLIDAYS”, but that seems over-used these days.
Regardless, another Thanksgiving has passed and the Christmas Season is underway. When you’re a kid Christmas is the most important day of the year. It’s the expectation leading up to Christmas that really counts. Christmas time means parties at school, the school play, being with friends, various get-togethers and dream trips to the Toy Store. It also means presents from Santa followed by a week with no school. What could be better?

Ah, November, the month of Thanksgiving. Yes, the month!
Thanksgiving isn’t just a day when we overeat and watch football, but a time to reflect on all of the events, both good and bad, that have made us who we are.
Yes, there have been some bad times, but I’m sure that you would agree that the good times far outweigh the bad. Hence the term; “Count your blessings.” Life is what we make of it.

Men,
Although adversity has confronted us with the pandemic and the floods, our Club survives and prospers. It is due in large part to the devoted members of the Club, the Board of Directors and the eternal grace of God. We must be doing something right. Who could have imagined the adversities that we have recently encountered with a positive future for the Club. We are truly blessed!

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day men! March Madness is upon us and I hope that you have all received your COVID19 vaccinations along with your family members by the time you receive this Newsletter. Our Board’s Committee on Alternative Sites for our actual meetings has settled upon the Tompkins Center located in Windmill Point Park, Grosse Pointe Park as our temporary home for actual meetings until the War Memorial welcomes our return. There will be plenty of space for us to maintain social distancing. There is ample parking space and the meetings will potentially be catered by Mary Lou Muer of Blue Pointe fame. The Committee is ironing out cost and the menu selections, but they assure me that everything will be to our satisfaction and enjoyment. We are aiming at May to begin our meetings at the Tompkins Center, if all goes well. We will update you as we progress.

Men,
It's hard to believe that we have been plagued with COVID19 for one year now. When considering all that we have lost since it began, we can fully appreciate its significance in how it has changed our lives, possibly forever. Masks and social distancing are minor inconveniences when taking into account the deaths, businesses, schools and homelife disrupted. We are fortunate, in that the Club remains and is reworking itself to be more relevant to its members and the community.
