September Tennis News

Gentlemen,

Yes, it's that time again when we transition from playing outdoors to our indoor home at Eastside.  We will have the same deal as last year, including a 15% discount on the $200 membership-- $175.  You must be a member of Eastside to play with the SMTC indoors.  Our first session will be at 10:30 September 9th and we will continue our Monday, Wednesday and Friday routine for the season.  We will be playing at the Eastpointe courts Labor day and throughout the week until the 9th.

We have a date for the Steak roast!  Save Thursday evening October 3rd for our most popular social event of the year.  Once again, the lovely Tompkins Center will be the location, with freighters passing so closely that you'd swear that you could hit them with a tennis ball.  More details to follow.

See you on the courts, Leon

August Tennis News

Now that August has arrived, GPSM tennis club has changed its outdoor venue from George Elworthy Park to Eastpointe Senior Sports Center located at 16600 Stevens Road one block east of Gratiot. Led by Al Truhan, our club has assumed the responsibility of transforming the rather dilapidated, cracked, grass-infiltrated courts to very playable resurfaced courts with new nets and freshly painted lines- all done with generous contributions of time and money from tennis players and the city of Eastpointe.

As noted in the photos, the end- of- the- year tennis tournament had the same results as last year with Al Truhan once again earning the victory over a most determined Jim Harvey. Jeff Hatcher and Bob Wrosch deserve recognition as runners-up. We will continue to compete at the Eastpointe courts for the remainder of the summer season and invite all men over the age of 55 to join us in friendly competition and banter on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays 9:30-11:30. After Labor Day we return to Eastside Tennis and Fitness for indoor play.

After May elections our officers remain Leon Trumbauer - president Tom Davison - vice president Jim Harvey - treasurer Roy Vorhees - secretary

There will be a Pizza Party Friday 5/24 following tennis and a brief annual meeting.  If you have any interest in becoming an officer please contact one of us.  Jets Pizza, antipasto salad, craft beers, wine and soda are on the menu.

Just a final reminder that the memorial for Joe Hazebrook is at 4pm Saturday,5/18, Grosse Pointe Presbyterian Church with a celebration of life following at 5:30 at Bayview Yacht Club.

May Tennis News

First of all the Men's Tennis Club would like to render our condolences to the family of Tom and Carol Cracchiolo, who both passed away in March. Tom was a good friend and formidable competitor on the courts till the age of 89, while remaining a social supporter thereafter. We will miss them.

As the indoor season winds down in May, we look forward to our end of the season Roy Vorhees, Jr. Memorial tournament May 13 - 17 before enjoying springtime outside on Memorial Day at George Elworthy Park for much of the summer, where we shall compete on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10:00 - 12:00 pm.

We welcome all newcomers to join us when convenient for friendly tennis with the understanding that not much experience is necessary, just an opportunity for a little exercise and camaraderie. At our age there is no shame in mediocrity on the courts.

Enticingly, we offer several social events with our significant others throughout the year. Upcoming on October 4 is our ever-popular steak roast at the Tompkins Center in GPP. Following will be the annual Christmas dinner at Lakeland Manor on December 7 with delicious food, enticing music and dancing.

Our roster includes about 60 members, including 8 retired from competition, but not from social interaction and friendships.

Tennis News for May, 2023

After at least 30 years of GPSM tennis, the fraternity has enjoyed another hearty and hardy season of friendly indoor competition at Eastside Tennis and Fitness... We are looking forward to continued outdoor engagement at George Elworthy Park across from the Neighborhood Club in GPC. Our winter season ended with our annual meeting, re-electing officers Leon Trumbauer president, Tom Davison VP, Roy Vorhees secretary, and Jim Harvey treasurer.

May’s highlight included the end of the year tournament, which led to finalists Al Pavli, Jeff Hatcher, Al Truhan, and last year’s tournament winner Jim Harvey, battling in a spectacular finale. The victor, Al Truhan, was presented with the Roy Vorhees, Jr. tournament trophy at our final day pizza party celebration. Al has won the championship twice, while last year’s winner, Jim Harvey, and this year’s runner up, has won 6 times.

Joe Johnson was honored as our senior active member, still visibly robust at the age of 88!

Competition is noticeably improving, though nothing like you see on television.

As always, we invite all men over 55 years old to join our fraternity starting Memorial Day at Elworthy Park for fun, fitness, and friendly banter.

Motto: We strive for excellence and improvement, and welcome mediocrity!

2023 Tennis Tournament

Gentlemen,

We will be busy the next few weeks wrapping up our indoor season and transitioning to our outdoor courts at Elworthy field.  The sign up sheet for our annual round robin tournament is waiting for your name.  This year we are trying to have an A and a B bracket in order to make it more fun for everyone.  The tournament will start Monday, May 15th, during our regular hours at Eastside.  Those who advance will play Wednesday, the 17th and if needed Friday, the 19th.  Courts will be available for members not playing in the event.  There is a $1 fee to take part.

Our end of the season pizza party will be the following Friday, the 26th after play at 12:30.  The annual meeting and election of officers will take place at this time.  If any of you have any interest in helping with the operation of the SMTC please let me know.

Memorial Day is our 1st day outside on courts 3,4,5 and 6 at Elworthy, 10am.  There is no charge for outdoor court time for all members who have paid their annual $10 dues. It has been a good year for the club with growing membership and active participation.  Let's have a great summer.

See you on the courts, Leon
