June 2023 President's Letter

Jim Hoekwater | Published on 6/6/2023

Gentlemen,

I hope all of you enjoyed your Memorial Day break and are looking forward, as I am, to resuming our luncheon meetings on June 13th

Our fiscal year (October 1 through September 30) will be entering its fourth quarter shortly and it is time to prepare to elect officers and directors for the upcoming fiscal year.  The Bylaws require the President to appoint a nominating committee to prepare a slate of candidates to be presented at the second week in July election meeting, and I have done that.  I am impressed by the willingness of members to serve, when asked.  The members of the committee are the Reverend Ed Bray, Bob Klacza, Gary Mann, Jim Odell and Dale Scrace.

The five members have an average attendance rate of 76% since we started meeting in person after Covid, an average age of 73 and have been members of the Club for an average of nearly seven years.

They will begin contacting potential candidates soon with the aggressive goal of presenting the slate in July’s newsletter.  If you are interested in serving do not hesitate to contact any of them.

As part of the nominating committee selection process the membership was analyzed by age, years of membership, other activities, and prior service. A large group of potential qualified candidates for the Committee were identified. I also consulted with the incoming president.

Four board members will complete their terms in September - Dave Buckley, Jim Regan Brendan Ross and Jerry Teagan.  They are not eligible to be directors in the upcoming term but are eligible for other leadership roles in the Club.  Ed Wolking, our first VP will serve as the incoming President and Dan Clark, the second VP, will serve as the first VP.  Henry Fischer, the immediate Past President, will also be completing his term in September.

In addition to the four board members and the Second Vice President, the Committee will be nominating a replacement for our Treasurer, Dave Buckler, who has decided not to stand for reelection.  Dave was the Assistant Treasurer for two years while I served as Treasurer and served as Treasure for the past two years.  What a treasure he has been! He mechanized the general ledger and accounting reports so information could be collected, reported, and analyzed in ways that were all previously done manually or not possible.  He consistently attended Board Meetings and created, as an offshoot of the accounting system, a method of reconciling and ensuring the integrity of the membership records (for which he earned rave reviews from the then Internal Auditor, Art Stefanski).  Dave serves on numerous boards of charitable organizations and is currently serving as the acting Finance Director of Memorial Church - his energy makes my head spin.

Many thanks to all who offer their talents and time to support the Club!

Best Regards,

Jim Hoekwater

President
