Mil Hurley, known as the founder of the Southern Gardener, a local landscaping and gardening business, described the founding of the Moross Greenway and the progress it has made.
The Moross Greenway Project was conceived by Sheila O'Hara in 2004. After years of discussion and fundraising, a 501(c)(3) non-profit partnership of Eastside Detroit community, civic and religious groups was formed in 2009 to work collaboratively to re-landscape the seven median islands on Moross Road between the Ascension St. John Hospital and Medical Center and the I-94 service drive. The Project broke ground in the Fall of 2015 with
planting completed in the Spring of 2017. Additional planting of thousands of trees, shrubs, grasses, flowers and perennial plants have been made and maintained, and in 2019 art was added in the form of large-scale sculptures, mostly by Michigan artists. Additional pieces were added again this year and now total 25. All of them are for sale, and all but one are leased by the Project from the artists.
Volunteer clean-up days are held each spring and fall, and monetary donations are greatly appreciated. To contact the Project or to make a donation, visit their website at Morossgreenway.org
