Gordie Howe International Bridge

David Morrow | Published on 4/23/2024

Stephanie Campeau, Associate Vice President, Stakeholder and Community Relations (Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority) spoke to the Club on April 23rd about the status of the Gordie Howe International Bridge. Stephanie emphasized the many years of planning that preceded the construction that we see now, including lengthy environmental and traffic studies, together with community impact and mitigation studies, worker safety, interchange and port of entry planning, and numerous other considerations.
Canada is responsible for constructing, financing and operating the new crossing through a public-private partnership. Construction began in late 2018 and should lead to an opening in 2025. The bridge will have 6 lanes initially, but could expand to eight. It will also feature a lane for pedestrians and bicycles. The tolls will not be set until next year.
